The Maine Appalachian Trail Club (MATC) is building a new privy at Horseshoe Canyon in July, and they need your help!
On July 9 at 8 a.m. (the start time for this event may change as the event approaches), new and experienced volunteers will be preparing the site for a privy build. Tasks will include certified A.T. volunteer sawyers felling a couple of trees, volunteers digging to get a flat surface, and installing the base 4x6s. Access to this work area is still being planned, updates can be provided as available.
You are welcome to join on the fun, learn new skills, and help maintain the Appalachian Trail (A.T.)! A major principle of Leave No Trace Principles (LNT) is to dispose of waste properly, and to pack out what you pack in. Since visitors are not asked to pack out their poo on the A.T. (though some land managers request it), volunteers help visitors by building and maintaining privies that provide a sanitary means of composting human waste.
